SGI discount available for those medically unable to drive

April 16, 2010 – SGI encourages vehicle owners who are permanently unable to drive for medical reasons to apply for a non-driver medical discount.

SGI provides a 20 per cent discount to individuals who are driving age and own vehicles, but do not meet the Canadian Medical Association’s guidelines for driving. Because these individuals are unable to hold a driver’s licence, they may be ineligible for the Safe Driver Recognition program, which offers a discount to drivers with a record of safe driving.

“We want to ensure this group of vehicle owners isn’t unfairly excluded from our discount program,” said Minister Responsible for SGI June Draude. “Through consultations with affected groups, we know there are many people who may qualify for this and we’d like to see them take advantage of it.”

Vehicle owners wishing to apply for the non-driver medical discount should call SGI’s Medical Review Unit at 1-800-667-8015 (ext. 6176) or email [email protected]. For more information, visit the SGI website’s Driving with medical conditions page.
