Predict/Detect & Prevent: Auto Telematics

Factors related to driving behaviour that have been included in auto insurance modelling, rating and underwriting for decades include driving infractions, distance driven and claims experience.

GPS development in the '90s, either handheld or built into vehicles, proved the value of specialized computers and over-the-air signals from satellites.

The first patent for using telematics for auto insurance purposes was issued in 1997. Dongles were used to digitally capture and record basic information about location, speed, hard braking, etc. But gathering and submitting the data involved manual steps.

By adding real-time transmission of the data, feedback to drivers could be provided frequently, i.e. daily or end-of-trip. This quick turnaround of reporting, with or without some degree of gamification, enabled an opportunity to really influence driver behavior.

Subsequent development of smart phone apps to capture and transmit telematics was a large step forward for both convenience and costs.

Innovative improvements continue, in the quality of data gathered, the analysis of the data, and the influencing of driver behaviour.

Next week, looking ahead.
