Homeowners Insurance: Managing Risk

Like auto insurance, home owner, tenant and commercial dwelling insurance has seen a stream of announcements aimed at managing risk. Since the InsurTech revolution began, the pace has quickened dramatically.

Three areas of base-level innovation have enabled progress:

• In computing, tiny sensors can now cost-effectively detect many risk situations; doorbell cameras are just one example.
• Tied with better communications, risk situations can be reported via text, email or voice, or even trigger automatic actions, such as turning off a water supply.
• The data gathered by reported risk episodes now enables the development of better prevention and mitigation solutions.

More accurate data supports insurance industry programs. For example, improved flood maps are helping to better assess individual risks. In conjunction with governments, building codes can be revised to improve the resilience of structures, and community efforts can reduce the potential impact of flooding and other natural events like wildfire, earthquake, etc.

Some companies are themselves undertaking loss control actions for their policyholders. An example is Intact's recent Wildfire Defense Systems pilot to protect dwellings from imminent wildfire threats.

Enhanced insurance-customer collaboration for risk management is here – and growing.
