From Doug

IoT and Insurance

The decreasing cost of sensors has enabled all sorts of product innovations. Think of the sensors in a washroom sink that turn water on – or a sensor in a basement that (‘intelligently’) turns off the water supply to the home.

The sensor might generate data or simply be “wired” to cause a single action with a standalone function, as in those examples.

The Internet of Things, however, implies sensors which can communicate via the internet, which by definition implies data, that can in turn be captured, stored, analysed.

Where does insurance come into play?

Adding IoT into a product design in order to gather more data adds cost: sensors, connectivity, communications, data storage & processing, etc.

The product designers must see some value to be derived from this “new, extra” data.

Simplistically, the profit for an insurance product is “Premiums minus Expenses.” Expenses include acquisition, administration, loss and claims processing.

In order to avoid profit erosion when more expense is added to a product – certainly including IoT-enabled sensors – either the premium must increase, or one (or more) of the expense items must decrease.

Increasing the premium without identifying justifiable extra benefits will cause loss of business and possibly adverse selection.

Would most opportunity then be on the expense side? More on this next week.
