The world keeps changing around us as technology, climate, business, politics and other factors evolve.

And for every new means of reducing risk (e.g. cutting-edge water detection sensors to prevent leaks), there seems to be at least one example of a new risk (e.g., cyber and climate threats are proliferating day by day).

Just what is AI, anyway? Or, look at it another way: What is AI not?

We have posed the question of whether a digital handheld calculator is an example of AI.

Obviously, a calculator is artificial, according to the common definition.

If we surmise that it requires some measure of intelligence to do math, we can conclude that a digital calculator ought to qualify as an example of “artificial intelligence.”

But the world has moved on. A calculator is programmed and static; AI should include an element of learning, inference and knowledge.

Next week we will discuss an example.
