Toronto, ON (May 11, 2017) – In order to protect the cost of insurance premiums for honest customers, Aviva Canada is committed to taking action against anyone attempting to fraudulently pursue claims against the company.
On March 30, 2017, Abdirahman Yusuf Nur was charged by Toronto Police Service in connection with allegedly submitting forged documents to support his injury claim against Aviva Canada.
On August 25, 2015, Mr. Nur was struck by a motorist insured by Aviva Canada while crossing the street at an intersection in Etobicoke, Ontario. An injury claim was submitted by Mr. Nur’s legal representative for injuries he sustained. Claiming he was unable to return to work due to his injuries, Mr. Nur also submitted a claim to receive income replacement benefits.
Due to the nature of the supporting claim documentation received from Mr. Nur’s legal representative, Aviva Canada launched an investigation and concluded that Mr. Nur was not employed as claimed, and he had allegedly submitted multiple forged documents in order to receive income replacement benefits.
Aviva Canada presented their findings to Toronto Police Service, and Mr. Nur was charged with the following criminal offences:
- Attempted Fraud Over $5,000;
- False Pretenses;
- Three counts of Uttering a Forged Document.
Claimants who take advantage of the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule in Ontario contribute to the more than $1 billion per year insurance fraud problem in Canada. Aviva Canada is committed to protecting customers from fraudulent claims by continuing to seek prosecution when a fraud has been committed.
“The no-fault insurance product that provides healthcare benefits to claimants regardless of fault has become process-laden, making it a target for fraudsters. Aviva will continue to pursue charges in any instance where someone presents a fraudulent claim,” said Christopher Lang, Senior Manager, Fraud Management, Aviva Canada. “It is one of the ways we can protect the premiums of our honest policyholders.”
