Aviva Canada expands personal coverage to Alberta ride-sharing drivers

Aviva applauds the Alberta Governments insurance policy for safe and fair ride-sharing

Toronto, ON (June 30, 2016) – Aviva Canada applauds the Alberta Superintendent of Insurance and the Alberta Government for their hard work and commitment in developing a new ride-sharing insurance solution. Following the Alberta Government’s announcement, Aviva is excited to expand its independent ride-sharing coverage product offering to Alberta drivers who carry paying passengers in their vehicles.

“With ride-sharing on the rise, consumers in Alberta now have new options available to them,” said Greg Somerville, President and CEO of Aviva Canada. “Following the footsteps of our Ontario ride-share solution, we’re thrilled to address a market need in Alberta with a simple and affordable solution. Our insurance coverage will provide drivers and passengers with absolute peace of mind while ride-sharing.”

Available to Albertans as of August 1, Aviva’s ride-share coverage is an easy add-on to an Aviva customer’s existing personal auto policy. Ride-sharing drivers will be protected from the moment they initiate looking for passengers through to collecting and dropping off those passengers. Eligibility for coverage will be based on some simple underwriting criteria (e.g., maximum of eight passengers, licensed for a minimum of six years, no other commercial use, etc.).

The coverage will be available for drivers that spend up to 20-hours a week participating in ride-sharing. The cost for the additional coverage will equate to a small portion of the income earned by the driver, calculated using factors such as time spent ride-sharing, area driven, and driving record.

“We support any insurance product that provides appropriate coverage for the individual risk and additional protection for the consumer,” said Julia Marshall, President of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta.

Aviva is currently reviewing the government’s new Standard Policy Form No. 9 (“SPF 9”) and is considering an insurance solution under the personal automobile policy that will bridge the SPF 9 gap (the period when drivers are available to accept a ride and are waiting to be connected with a passenger). Consumer protection is a top priority for Aviva and their coverage offerings will continue to evolve to meet the needs of customers.
