Consider the Safety of Older Drivers

MARCON Mobility Newsletter

Montreal, QC (Dec. 13, 2013) – As the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirms, older individuals are at a “risk of dying or sustaining serious injuries, even in low-severity crashes.” Given that the 65+ age group in most Western societies is growing at a faster pace than the population as a whole, it is becoming increasingly important to address the safety of these individuals in a vehicular context. Moreover, in a previous newsletter, we drew your attention to the fact that we have an estimated 120,000 people in Canada with a valid driver’s permit who suffer from some form of dementia, and the number will likely double in the next decade.

Our society will be increasingly pressed to develop solutions that provide our seniors with safe, quality, accessible and sustainable mobility.
