CALGARY June 21, 2012 Over 18,000 new cars were sold in Alberta in 2011.[i] Since the model of a car affects a driver’s insurance rate, car insurance is an important factor to consider and budget for when buying a car or truck. Whether purchasing new or used, Allstate Insurance Company of Canada recommends Albertan car shoppers use its new online quote tool to easily assess the cost of a vehicle’s insurance and quickly compare it for each vehicle they are considering.
“We wanted to make finding and shopping for the right insurance easier for something that is often one of the biggest purchases someone makes a vehicle,” says Amy Woods, spokesperson for Allstate Canada. “Albertans are very active Internet users[ii] and often use it to research purchases, so why not research all aspects of the purchase, including what the potential insurance premiums might be, to avoid big surprises and going over budget.”
Getting an online insurance quote can often be complicated, but Allstate Canada’s online quote tool provides an initial range in only five questions, with the option of spending a little bit longer to get a more personalized estimate. Allstate first piloted this online quoting tool in Quebec in late 2011 and has seen online quote completion rates increase by 48.8 per cent in that province.

What goes into determining car insurance rates? Each insurance provider calculates premiums differently, but typically policies account for these five factors:
- Age of driver;
- Where the driver lives;
- Themodel of vehicle, though not the colour;
- How far (in kilometres) the car is driven daily;
- Driving record and the number of any additional drivers using the car.
What the policy covers is another important cost factor. A policy with more types of coverage will have higher premiums than one with just the minimum required by the province.
Most auto insurance companies, like Allstate Canada, offer reduced insurance rates when insuring multiple vehicles on the same policy or if there are other policies with the same insurance provider such as home and tenant insurance.
