The Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction is pleased to invite you to participate in a workshop with Peter Bobrowsky, Senior Research Scientist with the Geological Survey of Canada. In the last 150 years, landslides have killed more individuals in Canada than all other natural hazards combined. Direct and indirect economic losses resulting from landslides are estimated to be in the range of $200-$400 million per year. The Geological Survey of Canada provides a national forum for coordinating landslide assessment and evaluation studies and collaborates closely with individuals from the private sector, academia and various provincial government agencies. This lecture will review the state of knowledge regarding landslide hazards in Canada, outline current activities being undertaken by the Geological Survey of Canada and will address gaps and future directions needed to effectively manage this unique hazard.
Dr. Bobrowsky obtained his PhD at the University of Alberta in 1989 and since then has worked on a variety of natural hazard projects. Besides current landslide work in Canada he is also collaborating in field studies in Peru, China and India. He is the Quality Control Scientist for a European Commission funded research project entitled ARMONIA (Applied multi Risk Mapping of Natural Hazards for Impact Assessment), is Secretary General of the International Union for Geological Sciences and Vice President of the International Consortium on Landslides. He has over 200 publications on a variety of subjects. He recently edited the volume entitled Comet/Asteroid Impacts and Human Society (Springer Verlage Publishers) which is due out this December.

Each month we will host an informal discussion of current research and industry issues related to natural hazards. Attendance will be limited to ensure that participants can directly contribute to the discussion. The cost is $75 ($150 for non-members, if space permits) for each forum. Business casual dress.
