TORONTO, April 14, 2005 This year, Insurance Canada proudly celebrates a decade of serving insurance professionals and consumers through its Web site, www.insurance-canada.ca. The first Internet portal in North America devoted to the insurance industry, Insurance Canada remains the only site of its kind in this country.
When Insurance Canadas five founding partners launched the site in 1995, few organizations were using the Internet for commercial purposes. Talk focused on the information highway and then the World Wide Web. Back then, as one partner recalls, the highlight of our primitive cyber-surfing was a U.K. universitys Web site, where we could observe a coffee pot sitting in the student lounge, in real time!
The brainchild of industry veterans and visionaries Doug Grant and Patrick Vice, Insurance-Canada.ca began as a clearinghouse or cybermall for insurance-related information for industry professionals. A partnership formed at that time with John Wyndham, publisher of Canadian Insurance magazine and president of Stone & Cox Ltd., continues to bring added value to both parties today. In 1996, David Gibbons joined the partnership as business manager, and now serves as our president.
After Insurance Canada had been operating for about a year, editor Sally Praskey noticed that many of the questions she was receiving via the feedback form were coming from consumers. That prompted the launch of ConsumerInfo, the consumer portion of Insurance Canada, in 1997, endorsed by the Consumers Association of Canada and the Consumers Council of Canada.
Insurance Canada continues to evolve along with the Internet. On the professional side, we have added many sections, including Special Products and Career Opportunities, as well as launched a weekly e-mail newsletter. ConsumerInfo now features a Directory of Special Coverages, Online Quotes section, and much more. Insurance Canada now attracts 300,000 page views per month.
In honour of our 10th anniversary, Insurance Canada has made a donation to the Women in Insurance Cancer Crusade (WICC).
