The Fellow of Distinction Award is presented annually to a Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP) or a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada (FIIC). The recipients are nominated by colleagues in recognition of outstanding contributions to the insurance industry in Canada.
Phil Cook, MBA, FCIP, Chairman and CEO of Focus Group Inc., has been selected as this year’s recipient. Phil has served the Insurance Institutes in senior roles for longer than almost any volunteer has, and through some of the most important initiatives in its history. Phil first volunteered for the Institute as an evening class instructor in 1968 and has served as a guest speaker and seminar and conference leader ever since. He was recruited in 1974 to the Insurance Institute of Ontario’s (IIO’s) Community College Liaison Committee. Phil chaired several other committees as an IIO Council member before becoming President of IIO in 1989.
In that same year, he joined the Board of Governors and the Executive Committee of the national Institute and chaired its Communications Advisory Committee. In 1990, Phil became chair of the national Institute’s new Communications Committee. In 1997, the Committee was dissolved and replaced in 1998 by the CIP Society as part of the Institute’s major restructuring. Once again, Phil accepted the chair. He played a critical role in shaping the vision for the CIP Society and steered the new entity from no members at its launch to over 9,000 members and an extensive list of benefits for them. Phil was instrumental in the Institute’s decision to begin electing graduates as Chartered Insurance Professionals and Fellow Chartered Insurance Professionals-the culmination of 32 outstanding years of dedicated service.
Phil is a knowledgeable and committed industry leader. He will be awarded the Fellow of Distinction Award at the CIP Society reception for New Fellows at the Albany Club on January 23, 2003.
