Taming the Information Explosion
Wednesday, June 12, 2002
the premier Internet reference site for insurance in Canada
The term "information explosion" has almost become a cliché. But that doesn't minimize the pain
insurance companies are experiencing as they strive to process more information at a faster rate so as to meet
growing customer and channel expectations.
Insurance, more than any industry, is being squeezed between competitive and regulatory pressures
on the one hand and the frustration of trying to harness information on the other. That's because insurance is
so information intensive, with data from many sources converging on your office.
Insurance companies need to organize the flood of information coming in from outside the business
(claims, applications, letters, reports, forms, photos, e-mail and even videos) and merge it with the masses of
data already residing in line of business computer systems. That flood is compounded by the volumes of information
generated within the organization. In the past, and even today, a level of efficiency is attained through sheer
human effort, manual data entry, teams of filing clerks running back and forth with documents and files, and
cumbersome check-in/ checkout systems.
Another generation of technologies has arrived and continues to evolve, addressing:
The management of unstructured information - from paper documents or their electronic
equivalents - fax, image, emails, photos, graphics and videos;
The integration of this support and their processes with traditional lines of business
applications and systems;
The sharing of information among a variety of people, both within the organisation and
across corporate boundaries; and
Collaboration among a variety of individuals from one or more businesses who make up a
temporary and casual team, or long term, more formal teams.
This seminar will address the deployment of this next generation toolset in the insurance industry
by discussing:
Line of business and corporate infrastructure examples where the various tools apply
Business case details for theirimplementation
Features and functions
Case studies from insurance implementations
Implementation experiences - do's and don'ts
As the insurance industry addresses growing competition for customer wallet share, products,
services, and the customer experience are becoming increasingly crucial focus points. The tighter management of
unstructured information will be one element of the drive to success.
