During the underwriting process forindividual cases, or on a standard basis forcertain segments of business, it is desirable to reinsure a portion of a risk. Like any other process, the parameters which define which risks to be reinsured and the share of each risk can change overtime. Outside expertise can be deployed to examine these criteria on a periodic basis to determine the best parameters.

Reinsurance processing will also evolve over time, as internal company processes are improved and as the technical and business relationships with reinsurance partners change. In some cases the whole reinsurance process can be outsourced to a third party which specialises in such transactions, while in other cases consultants with the skills and experience can be employed to review and improve internal processes.
