LOGiQ3 innovative training course hailed

Life reinsurance services company underwriting program sponsored by Munich Re

April 27 2010: The intensive underwriting training program covering all facets of risk selection offered by LOGiQ3 to the North American underwriting community has been sponsored for the first time by Munich Re, resulting in a unique offering from the leading Canadian reinsurer.

Munich Re has confirmed a need for underwriting training in the industry and felt this sponsorship would raise not only the awareness of the training shortage, but also the quality of LOGIQ3’s program.

Launched in 2007, the LOGiQ3 course, a unique underwriting training program comprising classroom type training of eight hours per day running for six weeks, has graduated 69 underwriters in Canada since inception, with the most recent training session including students from a reinsurer for the first time. The most recent graduates are from Munich Re and three major life insurance companies.

Joan Tolan, Vice-President, Underwriting, Canada and Underwriting Best Practices, North America at Munich Reinsurance Canada, says that everyone benefits from raising the standards of underwriting in the life business:

"By sponsoring the LOGiQ3 underwriting training course, we develop not just talented underwriters but great working relationships with future leaders in the industry. We've been delighted with the results and looking ahead we would definitely consider repeating the process."

The course, branded Taught by Underwriters for Underwriters, is not just about underwriting a case, but also specializes in the understanding and the logical thinking process of analyzing a series of facts and evaluating the risk from an insurance perspective, and at the same time has been shown to additionally benefit claims adjudicators and distribution support teams.

Carmela Tedesco, Vice President, Underwriting at LOGiQ3, says that life underwriting training had been put on the back burner by many companies in Canada as a result of business volumes increasing, and less time or resources being made available to invest in training underwriters internally:

"We are seeing seasoned senior underwriters retiring, creating a large knowledge gap in our industry which makes it difficult for management to plan for succession. Companies are now seeing the benefits of underwriting training, not only for today but for the future."

"Because underwriting training is a challenge in the industry, the LOGiQ3 program has become a career changing event to some of the individuals who attended it, as the testimonials from students at our recent graduation ceremony affirmed, when they spoke about their thoughts on the program in front of invited management from each of their companies," she added.
