Appraisers or (e)valuators over time acquire the knowledge, skill and experience, which along with the appropriate sources of current information, allows them to place a value on an item.
For insurance purposes, an appraisal may be needed when an item, such as a piece of jewelry or art, is about to be insured. Many common items, such as standard automobiles, can be valued without specialized assistance because of the large numbers of similar vehicles. However, customized vehicles, antique autos or others with some inherent unique quality, may well require more specialized assessment.
An apraisal is also often required at the time of a claim. Based on the information about the item at time of loss or damage, appraisers can help the insurance company determine an appropriate value in order that proper indemnification can be made.
